The Kootenai County Board of Commissioners met on March 25, 2025, to discuss significant funding requests that could impact local historical preservation and public safety initiatives.
One of the key topics was a funding request from the Rathdrum Westwood Historical Society, represented by Lisa Peterson. The society is seeking $30,000 from the county to replace the deteriorating roof of the historic jail building, which dates back to 1890. Peterson highlighted the building's rich history, noting its transformation from a county jail to a library and community meeting hall. The society, which operates entirely on volunteer labor and donations, has been actively involved in community engagement, including school tours and local events.

The society has a bid from a local roofing company for $42,000, which includes high-quality materials recommended for historical buildings. They currently have $11,740 remaining from a previous grant but require additional funds to complete the project. The commissioners acknowledged the request and indicated that it would be considered during the upcoming budget discussions, emphasizing the need to prioritize mandated services.
In another discussion, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office presented a request for the replacement of their sonar equipment, which is crucial for underwater search and recovery operations. Sergeant Ryan Miller explained that the current system, which has been in use for nearly 20 years, is no longer serviceable. The proposed replacement would cost approximately $84,277.23. The sheriff's office is also exploring potential funding from local organizations to help cover the costs.
The meeting underscored the county's commitment to preserving its historical landmarks while ensuring public safety through updated technology. As budget season approaches, both requests will be evaluated for their potential benefits to the community. The discussions reflect ongoing efforts to balance historical preservation with the pressing needs of public safety in Kootenai County.
