McKinney Development Services highlights $1.3B construction valuation and strong growth trends

The McKinney City Council held a work session and special meeting on March 25, 2025, focusing on community development and growth initiatives. The session highlighted the ongoing expansion of educational programs and significant development activity within the city.

Rick, a representative from the local education sector, discussed the establishment of a community center designed to host various events, primarily related to agriculture and science. He emphasized the importance of expanding educational outreach, noting that McKinney Independent School District (MISD) has already engaged 21 elementary schools and several private institutions in farm-related programs. The goal is to enhance community involvement, including initiatives aimed at senior citizens and nutritional education.

Michael Quint, the executive director of development services, presented an overview of the city's development activities for 2024. He reported that McKinney experienced approximately $1.3 billion in new construction valuation, a slight decrease from the previous year, which was inflated by multifamily projects. Notably, single-family residential development reached its highest level since 2017, with 2,310 building permits issued.

Quint highlighted the consistency in non-residential construction, which totaled $485 million, indicating stable growth in this sector. He pointed out that industrial development is a significant contributor to this growth, with three of the top five non-tax-exempt projects being industrial in nature.

The meeting also addressed ongoing infrastructure improvements, including the completion of Wilmeth Road and the development of Lot Howell Parkway, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. The city is also introducing a municipal management district for the Honey Creek area, which is expected to further enhance local development.

Quint concluded by encouraging residents to access the city’s annual development report and an interactive map available on the city’s website, which provides detailed information about ongoing projects and future developments.
