Broomfield Council approves Water Runs Back as new open space name

Broomfield County is set to enhance its open space offerings with the approval of a new name for a 32-acre property located at 18100 County Road 7. During the recent City Council session, members unanimously voted to name the area "Water Runs Back," a title inspired by its natural features and rooted in indigenous naming practices.

The decision follows a comprehensive community engagement process, which included input from local residents and tribal representatives. The name reflects a significant cultural connection, as it was suggested by tribal leader Mister Mosqueda during a site visit. The name symbolizes the water rights associated with the property and aims to honor the area's indigenous heritage.

The council's approval comes after a poll indicated strong community support, with 86% of respondents favoring the name. The open space will not only serve as a recreational area but also as a cultural touchstone for the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, fostering learning and reconciliation within the community.

In addition to the naming resolution, the council discussed ongoing funding challenges for county administration related to the Health First Colorado Medicaid program. Deputy Director Chris Dewhurst highlighted that Broomfield is currently understaffed in processing benefits due to statewide underfunding, which has impacted local services. While the 2025 budget may address some of these issues, there are no expectations for backfill funding from previous years.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue monitoring the funding situation and ensuring that the community's needs are met as the new open space initiative moves forward.
