SLPS highlights success of dual enrollment programs at Rankin Technical College

Students in the St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS) district are set to gain valuable career skills through the district's dual enrollment program at Rankin Technical College, as highlighted during the Board of Education meeting on March 25, 2025. The program, which currently serves 28 students from various high schools, focuses on providing hands-on training in fields such as electrical automation and carpentry, preparing students for immediate employment opportunities after graduation.

Dr. Dano, who presented the academic update, emphasized the importance of choice and personalized support in education, stating that the dual enrollment program aligns with the district's strategic values of fostering engaged and joyful learners. Students must maintain a minimum GPA and attendance to qualify, ensuring that participants are committed to their education.

Two students, Isaiah McCoy and David Harris, shared their experiences at Rankin, illustrating the program's impact on their personal and professional growth. McCoy, who is enrolled in the electrical automation program, described the diverse environment and the real-world problem-solving skills he has developed. He noted that the program has taught him accountability and collaboration, essential skills for his future career.

Harris, a senior from Gateway STEM High School, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the program has transformed his approach to learning and responsibility. He is currently studying high-performance automotive technology and expressed enthusiasm for the practical skills he is acquiring.

The meeting also addressed the program's growth potential, with Dr. Henning noting that interest is increasing, and the program's capacity could soon be reached. An open house for interested students is scheduled for April 5, with applications closing on April 19, 2025.

The dual enrollment initiative not only equips students with technical skills but also fosters a sense of ownership over their education, preparing them for successful careers in high-demand fields. As the program continues to expand, it promises to play a crucial role in shaping the future workforce of St. Louis.
