Newport News invests in housing study and education funding for upcoming fiscal year

Newport News City Council is taking significant steps to enhance community support and economic growth, as highlighted in their recent work session on March 25, 2025. A key focus of the meeting was the proposed increase in the tax exemption for elderly homeowners, raising it from $25,000 to align with the current poverty level of $32,150 for a family of four. This change aims to provide much-needed financial relief to senior residents, with an estimated impact on up to 23 households.

City officials emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that only 36 participants currently benefit from the existing exemption, which totals around $80,000 in tax relief. Education remains a priority, with full funding for schools and a one-time allocation of $1.1 million for cash capital projects. The city is also investing in a trades academy to provide vocational training for young residents, creating a pipeline to local jobs.
