Iona University unveils plans for new upper green space and meditation grotto

The New Rochelle Planning Board recently discussed an exciting new project aimed at enhancing the open spaces at Iona University. The proposed development, known as the Upper Green Project, is designed to create serene areas for passive recreation, including a meditation grotto and extensive landscaping features. This initiative is set to transform a currently derelict maintenance yard into a beautiful and functional space for students and the community.

Architect Chris Tremitola from Allied Design Studio presented the plans, highlighting the project's focus on creating inward-facing recreational areas that prioritize tranquility and contemplation. The design includes a natural pollination corridor and seating walls that will encircle the main open space, providing a peaceful environment for students to relax and engage in casual activities.

One of the significant changes involves the removal of an uninhabited cottage, which will allow for more open space and improve the view towards the athletic fields. The project also aims to enhance safety with low-voltage lighting along major pathways, ensuring that the area remains well-lit without disturbing the surrounding environment.

The planning board members expressed interest in how the space would be utilized by students. While the university does not plan to issue permits for organized events, they encourage informal use of the area for classes and seminars, fostering a connection between nature and education.
