Morgantown Council considers acquiring historic Easton Roller Mill from Monongalia County Society

In a recent Committee of the Whole meeting held on March 25, 2025, the Morgantown City Council discussed a significant proposal regarding the Easton Roller Mill property. Jason Burns, manager of the Morgantown History Museum, presented the case for the city to accept the mill and its assets from the Monongalia County Historical Society. This proposal marks a pivotal moment for the city, as it seeks to preserve an important piece of local history.

The Easton Roller Mill, built in the late 1860s, has been a part of Morgantown's infrastructure for over a century. Although it ceased operations in 1941 due to changes in wheat production, the mill has remained a symbol of the region's agricultural heritage. Burns highlighted that the mill is in good structural condition, with an engineering survey confirming its soundness. However, some repairs are needed, including painting and accessibility upgrades. These improvements could enhance the site’s usability for events and public gatherings.

The Easton Roller Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, underscoring its importance to the community. If accepted, this acquisition would be the largest addition to the Morgantown History Museum's collection, providing new opportunities for education and engagement with local history.
