Santa Barbara's historic Taco Bell reviewed for preservation status

The Historic Landmarks Commission meeting on March 26, 2025, focused on the evaluation of a historic structures report concerning the last operating Taco Bell in the country, located in Santa Barbara. The report was initiated to assess the building's historical significance, particularly as it represents a unique example of programmatic architecture.

Pamela Post and Tim Hazeltine from Post Hazeltine Associates presented the findings of the report, which concluded that the Taco Bell, built in 1966, does not qualify as a historic resource. The report stated that it is not eligible for designation as a City of Santa Barbara landmark, structure of merit, or for inclusion on the historic resources inventory.

The discussion highlighted the building's architectural style, which is intended to reflect the type of food served, although it does not take the shape of a taco itself. This style is part of a broader category of programmatic architecture, which includes buildings designed to resemble the products they sell, such as a hot dog-shaped restaurant in Los Angeles.

Despite its cultural significance as a nostalgic icon for the community, the commission ultimately determined that the Taco Bell does not meet the criteria for historic designation. The meeting underscored the importance of preserving local history while also adhering to established guidelines for historic recognition.
