Georgia allocates $150,000 for watershed dam maintenance and safety improvements

During the recent Senate Committee on Children and Families meeting in Georgia, a significant discussion emerged regarding the allocation of $150,000 for the maintenance of watershed dams. This funding is crucial for ensuring the safety and functionality of these structures, which are categorized into two types: Category 1 dams, which pose a potential loss of life if they fail, and Category 2 dams, which could lead to structural damage without the same level of regulatory oversight.

The committee highlighted that Georgia has 200 Category 1 dams, with approximately 60 of them previously permitted. In the previous fiscal year, $165,000 was spent to maintain 62 dams, averaging nearly $2,700 per dam.
