Sky Island Pickleball Association proposes eight new courts in Cochise County

During the recent City Council Work Session in Sierra Vista, discussions centered around the growing popularity of pickleball and the need for expanded facilities to accommodate the sport. Michael Wetzel, president of the Sky Island Pickleball Association, presented a proposal to add eight new pickleball courts adjacent to the existing basketball court, which he argued would significantly enhance community engagement and support for local tournaments.

Wetzel emphasized the inclusive nature of pickleball, highlighting its appeal across various demographics, including different ages and abilities. He noted that the current facilities are often overcrowded, with many players waiting for available courts, which detracts from the enjoyment of the sport. The proposed expansion aims to address this issue and foster a stronger sense of community through increased participation in pickleball.

Council members expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing the potential economic benefits of hosting tournaments and attracting visitors to the area. In addition to pickleball, the meeting also touched on the local tennis community, represented by Jeff Emery, president of the Tennis Association. Emery noted that while tennis participation is lower than pickleball, there is still a dedicated group of players who utilize the courts regularly. He raised concerns about the need for maintenance and improvements to meet standards for hosting sanctioned tournaments.

The discussions underscored a shared commitment among council members and community leaders to enhance recreational opportunities in Sierra Vista.
