St. Croix County opens dementia crisis stabilization unit with $600K grant funding

A significant milestone was reached at the St. Croix County Health and Human Services Board meeting on February 19, 2025, as officials announced the opening of a new dementia crisis stabilization unit. This facility, which began operations just 36 hours prior to the meeting, aims to provide essential support for individuals facing dementia-related crises. The unit was made possible through a startup grant of approximately $600,000, which was awarded after an initial request for $376,000 in funding.

The team behind the unit has been diligently working since September, meeting weekly to ensure all necessary services are in place. They have prioritized St. Croix County residents, with plans to extend services to surrounding areas in Northwest Wisconsin. Although no referrals have come in yet, officials are optimistic about the unit's potential impact.

In addition to the unit's launch, the board discussed the critical importance of maintaining Medicaid and Medicare funding for the county's health services. These programs account for a substantial portion of the county's budget, with approximately $4.2 million allocated for Health and Human Services and $6 million for the healthcare campus in 2024. Board members emphasized that these funds are vital for supporting vulnerable populations, including those with mental health needs, children, and seniors.

The resolution to affirm the importance of these funding sources aims to raise awareness about their role in preventing individuals from seeking care in emergency departments or jails, ultimately serving as a safety net for the community. The discussions highlighted the ongoing commitment of St. Croix County to provide essential health services and support for its residents.
