Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) is set to enhance student wellness through a new partnership with HealthCorps, following the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the Governing Board Study Session on March 26, 2025. This initiative aims to integrate health-promoting education, leadership opportunities, and service learning into the district's programs, targeting students from fifth to twelfth grade.
The program will be facilitated by college students who will work alongside CUSD staff to deliver evidence-based learning activities. These activities are designed to empower students to make positive behavioral changes that can improve their overall well-being and academic success. Participation in the program requires parental consent, ensuring that families are involved in their children's engagement.

Subscribe for Free During the meeting, district counselor Kristine Ryan highlighted the program's potential to serve as a pilot initiative, with interest from schools that already have wellness clubs, such as yoga. The goal is to start small, allowing schools to assess the program's fit within their communities before expanding it further.
While the initiative received support from several board members, concerns were raised regarding the distinction between educational programming and behavioral health counseling. One board member expressed apprehension about the potential implications of the program, emphasizing the need for licensed practitioners in behavioral health contexts. In response, Ryan and HealthCorps representative Jacqueline LaPlante clarified that the program focuses on education rather than counseling, with college mentors providing information on health topics like nutrition and stress management.
The partnership is backed by funding from the Arizona Department of Education, which aims to promote health and wellness among students as part of a broader initiative to prepare them for future careers in healthcare. The board's approval of the MOU marks a significant step towards fostering a supportive environment for student health and well-being in Chandler schools. As the program rolls out, it is expected to create valuable opportunities for students to learn from peers and engage in their communities positively.
