Utah introduces grant program for businesses to install electric vehicle charging stations

Utah's Transportation Commission has unveiled a new grant program aimed at enhancing electric vehicle infrastructure across the state. During the meeting on March 27, 2025, officials announced that local businesses will be able to apply for funding to install electric vehicle charging stations, making it easier for residents and visitors to access charging facilities similar to traditional gas stations. This initiative is part of Utah's broader strategy to support the transition to electric vehicles while minimizing state management of fuel sources.

The meeting also highlighted the annual report on program recommendations, detailing funding allocations for various transportation projects. The report categorized funding into three sections: current expenditures, previously funded projects, and new funding requests for the upcoming year. Notably, many of the new requests are tied to state funds, which can only be allocated on a yearly basis, reflecting the need for careful financial planning.

Additionally, the commission addressed uncertainties surrounding federal funding due to changes in the federal administration. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which is set to expire in September 2026, has created ambiguity regarding the continuation of certain programs. Some projects were marked with asterisks to indicate their uncertain future, contingent on whether Congress passes a continuing resolution or a new funding bill.
