In the vibrant atmosphere of the Parker Arts Academy, excitement is building as students prepare for a remarkable year ahead. The recent Board of Education meeting highlighted a thrilling opportunity for local students: the world premiere of "Scrooge's Romance," a new musical by acclaimed composer Christopher Curtis. This project marks a significant collaboration between Curtis and local playwright Jim Lyke, aiming to create a holiday musical tailored for high school and community performances.
The journey to this premiere began with inspiring master classes led by notable figures in the theater world. Last spring, students had the chance to learn from John Edwards, a Janesville native who has made a name for himself on Broadway, and Christopher Curtis, known for his work with Disney and Netflix. Curtis, who previously collaborated with the academy on "Chaplin the Musical," expressed a genuine interest in the students, fostering a connection that has blossomed into this new project.
Scheduled to run from November 30 to December 10, "Scrooge's Romance" promises to be a unique addition to the holiday season, filling a gap in the repertoire of suitable musicals for young performers. The creative process is still underway, with the book not yet finalized, but the characters and their stories are already taking shape, offering students a chance to workshop and refine the material alongside the creators.
Looking ahead, the academy's full season includes the classic play "Steel Magnolias" in January and the whimsical "Shrek the Musical" in April, ensuring a diverse range of performances that will engage both students and the community. As the curtain rises on this exciting year, the Parker Arts Academy continues to nurture talent and inspire the next generation of performers.
