Elm Grove approves We Energies easement for Pilgrim Park power line upgrades

The Elmbrook School District Board of Education discussed a significant easement request from We Energies during their recent meeting, addressing ongoing power reliability issues affecting local schools. The proposed easement would allow We Energies to bury power lines on the east side of Pilgrim Park, a move aimed at upgrading the power grid in the area.

Rick Domock, representing We Energies, explained that the project is part of a broader initiative to enhance power reliability, particularly in light of frequent outages experienced in recent years. The easement would cover approximately 367 feet and be 12 feet wide, situated in a wooded area that has been problematic due to fallen trees, particularly ash trees that have died off. This upgrade is crucial as it feeds power to both Pilgrim Park and Dixon Elementary, where past outages have disrupted learning, especially during severe weather.

Board members raised questions about the easement's implications, including whether We Energies would compensate the district for the use of its property. Domock clarified that the company does not pay for easements but will maintain the lines and manage any issues related to tree roots or other potential disruptions.

The timeline for the project is anticipated to begin in spring, with minimal disruption expected for students on campus. The board expressed optimism that this upgrade will significantly reduce power outages, thereby enhancing the learning environment for students.

In addition to the easement discussion, the board also touched on future plans for the area, including potential recreational uses, although any construction would need to adhere to city regulations regarding proximity to property lines.
