Ohio House Education Committee approves waiver for Lakeside High School snowstorm closure

In a recent Ashtabula City Council meeting, significant updates were provided regarding the ongoing situation at Lakeside High School following a roof collapse caused by heavy snowfall. The council discussed the successful efforts made to secure a waiver from the Ohio House Education Committee, allowing the school district to account for three days of closure during the December snowstorm without facing negative repercussions.

The roof collapse necessitated the relocation of students to ensure continuity in education. Grades 10 through 12 have been temporarily moved to Huron Primary School, while preschool students are now housed at Ontario. Ninth graders are attending classes at the former Mother of Sorrows Building on West Sixth Street. The district has made commendable efforts to facilitate this transition, including painting the Huron Building to resemble Lakeside High School, which has helped students adjust to their new environment.

The council highlighted the quick response from the district, which managed to relocate students within three days to avoid remote learning. The adjustments have been well-received, with reports indicating that students are thriving in their new settings. Additionally, the YMCA has provided discounted memberships for students, further supporting their well-being during this transition.

As for the damaged building, the roof is set to be completely removed, and an assessment of the walls will follow to check for any structural damage. Unfortunately, the first floor has suffered water damage, and the projected reopening date for Lakeside High School is set for August 2026. Despite these challenges, the district has reported that educational operations are running smoothly, with a noted decrease in disciplinary issues.
