A significant commitment to economic development in Chase City was announced during the Mecklenburg County Planning Commission meeting on March 27, 2025. Long Road Energy revealed plans for a new construction project that is expected to create over 50 jobs, with a notable $500,000 investment pledged to support the local community of Chase City, an area that has lagged behind neighboring towns like Clarksville and South Hill in economic growth.
The project aims to enhance local energy resources while addressing community concerns about electricity costs. Long Road Energy plans to sell power into the wholesale electricity market, which does not directly affect residential customers. However, the company is collaborating with First Solar to provide assistance to those struggling with their electricity bills.
In addition to economic benefits, the project will incorporate environmentally friendly practices. Long Road Energy intends to plant native and pollinator-friendly species in the project area and explore sheep grazing within fenced sections to maintain the landscape. The construction will also ensure significant setbacks from local waterways, with a minimum distance of 500 feet from solar panels to the nearest river.
Darren Lawrence, Vice President of Environmental at Long Road Energy, emphasized the company's commitment to community engagement during construction, promising a dedicated public liaison to address residents' concerns.
This initiative marks a pivotal step towards revitalizing Chase City and fostering sustainable energy practices in the region, with the community eagerly anticipating the project's milestones in the near future.
