Georgetown Electric Utility receives Diamond Level awards for reliability and safety

Georgetown's city officials announced significant advancements in both electric and water utilities during the State of the City meeting on March 27, 2025. The city is set to receive prestigious awards for its electric utility, including the Diamond Level on Reliability and Safety from the American Public Power Association (APPA). These accolades highlight Georgetown's commitment to providing reliable and safe electric service, with proactive maintenance practices contributing to minimal customer outages.

In addition to the awards, Georgetown has launched a new program to enhance streetlight maintenance. Residents can now report streetlight issues online using QR codes, allowing for quicker repairs and improved community safety. The city also introduced an energy efficiency program, offering services such as energy audits and support for residents interested in solar energy and battery installations.

On the water utility front, Georgetown's service area extends well beyond city limits, covering 400 square miles. The city is experiencing rapid growth, necessitating a comprehensive water resource plan. Currently, over 85% of Georgetown's water supply comes from surface water sources, with groundwater from the Edwards Aquifer being limited. To address future water needs, the city is focusing on conservation and exploring new groundwater sources, including contracts for water from the Carrizo Wilcox Aquifer.

Georgetown is also implementing automated enforcement of watering restrictions to promote water conservation. This technology allows the city to monitor water usage patterns effectively, ensuring compliance with watering regulations. The city aims to transition from once-a-week watering restrictions to a more flexible two-day schedule, contingent on the completion of the South Lake Treatment Plant, which is expected to significantly increase water treatment capacity.

These initiatives reflect Georgetown's proactive approach to managing its utilities, ensuring that residents have access to reliable electric and water services while preparing for future growth and environmental challenges.
