Lawrence County High School honors student Denton Shelton for masonry achievements

The Lawrence County School System Board of Education held its regular session meeting on March 27, 2025, where Principal Willie Joiner recognized an exceptional student from Lawrence County High School, Denton Shelton.

Denton Shelton, a senior, has distinguished himself in the field of masonry. Principal Joiner highlighted Shelton's impressive achievements, including his participation in various competitions. After only five weeks of preparation, Shelton excelled in the fast trial competition in Lebanon and later won the state competition at Skills USA, qualifying for the national event in Atlanta, where he placed third among competitors from 38 states.

Joiner noted that Shelton's recent success includes winning the trial competition again in Lebanon, which has qualified him for the world championships in Las Vegas. Shelton is currently preparing for another skills competition next month, aiming for further accolades.

Masonry instructor Steve Cheatwood praised Shelton's talent, stating that in his 45 years of teaching, he has only encountered two natural masons, with Shelton being notably superior. Cheatwood's endorsement underscores Shelton's exceptional work ethic and dedication, which he attributes to both Shelton's family and teachers.

The board meeting also included discussions about upcoming agenda items related to masonry work, further emphasizing the importance of vocational training in the school system. The recognition of Denton Shelton serves as a testament to the achievements of students within the Lawrence County School System and highlights the value of vocational education.
