City Council approves $402K for JFK Tennis and Basketball Court renovations

Northampton City Council made significant strides in its January 2, 2025 meeting, particularly regarding the rehabilitation of JFK Tennis and basketball courts. The council approved an appropriation of $402,000 in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds for this project, which combines previous funding efforts. Councilor Rothenberg raised concerns about the project’s financial history, noting that the courts had received $600,000 last year alone.

During the discussion, it was revealed that the total cost for rehabilitating the tennis and basketball courts is estimated at $1 million. Supervisor Mish explained that cost savings were achieved by merging the projects, as both facilities share the same infrastructure and require simultaneous rebuilding. Despite the approval, Councilor Rothenberg abstained from voting, citing a need for further consultation with the Community Preservation Committee regarding the funding gap.

In addition to the court rehabilitation, the council also addressed the ownership change of a parcel belonging to Suzanne Curtis, which passed with similar voting dynamics—8 in favor and 1 abstention from Rothenberg.

The meeting also included a preliminary discussion on the capital improvement program for fiscal years 2026 to 2030. While no votes were taken, the council moved to prioritize this topic, allowing for a comprehensive dialogue on future city projects. Councilor LaScalia noted feedback from constituents regarding a new bus loop, indicating ongoing community engagement in city planning.
