Northampton City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing public safety by approving a funding request aimed at improving safety measures at the city’s parking garage. During the December 5, 2024, meeting, council members discussed the urgent need for safety upgrades, particularly in light of a tragic incident that occurred in 2009, when a constituent's son fell from the garage.

He noted that the current labor market has driven up prices for construction work, making it challenging to secure reasonable bids. The council is hopeful that by combining these projects, they can attract more competitive offers.

Mayor Sharon praised Director McCarthy for his persistence in addressing these safety concerns, acknowledging the importance of the upgrades for the community. Councilor LaVarge also voiced support for the funding, highlighting the safety issues that have arisen in the garage and the necessity of immediate action.
