West Lafayette City Council reviews Walmart's gas station proposal near Celery Bog

The Tippecanoe County Area Board of Zoning Appeals convened on March 26, 2025, to discuss a contentious proposal from Walmart seeking a zoning variance to construct a gas station near the Celery Bog, a protected wetland area in West Lafayette. Walmart representatives reiterated their intention to maintain the current site for the proposed gas station, citing pedestrian safety concerns if relocated to a more centralized area. However, opposition from community members was strong. Peter Bunder, a local resident and former city council member, voiced historical concerns about the site, emphasizing the need to protect the Celery Bog. He argued against the necessity of another gas station, noting the existing number of stations in the area and the potential environmental risks associated with placing one near a sensitive ecosystem.

Sage Locmano, a doctoral student in environmental engineering, presented a detailed critique of the proposal. She highlighted the environmental hazards posed by gas stations, particularly in wetland areas, and pointed out that several nearby stations already have issues with leaking underground storage tanks. Locmano urged the board to deny the variance, advocating for the preservation of the Celery Bog, which supports diverse wildlife and offers recreational opportunities for the community.

The meeting concluded with a clear divide between corporate interests and community environmental concerns.
