Council reviews Elm Park renovations with new bathrooms and pickleball courts

The City of Williamsport is set to enhance Elm Park with a significant renovation project, including the addition of new restroom facilities and the conversion of tennis courts into pickleball courts. The project, funded by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, aims to improve accessibility and amenities for park-goers.

During the recent city council meeting, officials discussed the scope of the project, which includes paving walking paths to three baseball and softball fields, resurfacing existing tennis courts, and installing new concession areas. Notably, three of the current six tennis courts will be transformed into six pickleball courts, responding to the growing popularity of the sport.

The new restroom facilities, designed to be durable and resistant to vandalism, will be prefabricated and installed at the park's main entrance. However, the timeline for the project hinges on the availability of these restrooms, which could delay completion until October if not secured promptly. A potential opportunity arose when it was mentioned that a set of restrooms ordered by another entity fell through, which could expedite the project if acquired.

City officials expressed optimism about starting the project soon, with preliminary work on paths and courts expected to begin in April. If the restroom situation is resolved favorably, the project could be completed by mid-summer, enhancing the park's offerings for community members.

In addition to the Elm Park renovations, the council addressed the lack of bids for the Bowman Field netting project, indicating a need for a revised timeline and approach to ensure the project aligns with the upcoming baseball season.

As the city moves forward with these initiatives, residents can anticipate improved recreational facilities that cater to a variety of sports and community activities. The next city council meeting is scheduled for April 10, where further updates on these projects will be discussed.
