District unveils summer learning programs including CTE camps and credit recovery options

Cumberland County Schools is taking significant steps to enhance student engagement and academic success through innovative summer programs and a focus on career readiness. During the Board of Education meeting on March 27, 2025, officials discussed the implementation of virtual learning modules that require students to actively participate and demonstrate mastery of course content. This approach aims to ensure that students are not only completing assignments but are genuinely learning.

The virtual modules include a pre-unit assessment that identifies areas where students need improvement. A curriculum facilitator monitors progress and integrity, addressing any concerns about students completing work honestly. This system is particularly crucial during summer sessions when students often work independently. While some board members expressed concerns about the effectiveness of virtual learning without direct supervision, it was noted that many schools are providing in-person options for students needing additional support.

In addition to academic recovery, the meeting highlighted the importance of early reading intervention programs. The "Read to Achieve" initiative invites not only third graders but also first and second graders who demonstrate reading difficulties, aiming to catch challenges early and improve literacy outcomes.

Cumberland County Schools is also expanding its Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings. The district will host several summer camps focused on career readiness, including opportunities for students to earn industry-recognized credentials. These camps are designed to connect students with local business leaders and provide hands-on experiences that align with their career interests.

The CTE department reported impressive outcomes, with nearly 17,000 credentials earned by students last year, positioning the district as a leader in the state. This achievement underscores the commitment to preparing students for the workforce and ensuring they have the skills needed for future employment.
