Wilson County Commissioners approve $110K purchase of wood chipper truck using ARPA funds

Wilson County Commissioners have taken a significant step towards enhancing their operational capabilities by approving the purchase of a wood chipper truck, a decision made during their recent meeting on December 16, 2024. The truck, which will be utilized by all county commissioners, is set to be acquired using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, with a budget cap of $110,000.

Commissioner Perdola led the discussion, presenting research on the available options. After reviewing three bids, it was determined that the most viable choice is a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado MD work truck priced at $98,452. This truck, which features a turbocharged Duramax engine and four-wheel drive, was found at a dealership in Houston. The commissioners noted that shipping costs for out-of-state options would exceed the local bid, making the Houston truck the most cost-effective solution.

The court faced a challenge regarding the procurement process, as the truck is not listed on the Buy Board, which typically facilitates government purchases. However, after thorough investigation, it was concluded that no other vendors could provide a similar vehicle equipped to meet the county's specific needs. This finding allowed the court to consider the purchase as a single-source item, a designation that permits bypassing the usual bidding requirements under certain circumstances.

The decision to move forward with this purchase reflects the commissioners' commitment to transparency and due diligence, as they emphasized the extensive research conducted to find alternative options.
