The Taunton School Committee made significant strides in planning for the upcoming academic year during their meeting on March 5, 2025, with the adoption of a new school calendar and a proposed lottery system for preschool registration.
The committee unanimously approved Option 2 of the school calendar, which includes two professional learning days before the school year begins, a two-week break in December, and a last day of school set for June 18. This option was favored among the three presented, reflecting a strong preference from committee members for a balanced academic schedule.

To improve the registration process, they proposed transitioning to a lottery system for full-day preschool programs. This change aims to alleviate the stress and inequities faced by families during the current first-come, first-served registration nights, which have proven chaotic and anxiety-inducing.
Director of Technology Jennifer Ashley outlined the new online platform that will facilitate the lottery process. The system is designed to be user-friendly and equitable, allowing families to apply without the pressure of being first in line. An informational night is scheduled for March 27, where parents can learn about the curriculum and the application process without the immediate pressure of registration.
The lottery system will include features that prioritize families with multiple children and those already enrolled in the district, ensuring a fair chance for all applicants. After the application window closes on April 30, the lottery will be conducted on May 16, with notifications sent to families regarding their enrollment status.
These initiatives reflect the committee's commitment to enhancing educational access and equity within the Taunton community, addressing both the logistical challenges of school scheduling and the complexities of preschool enrollment. As the district moves forward, these changes are expected to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for families and students alike.
