Grand Rapids launches Grow 1000 program for youth employment and professional development

The Grand Rapids Public Safety Committee meeting on March 25, 2025, spotlighted the city's ongoing commitment to youth employment through the Grow 1000 program. Participants in the program will earn $13 an hour for 20 hours a week over six weeks, with three hours dedicated to professional development. The city is seeking to expand its partnerships, aiming for 130 placements this year, up from 48 host sites last year. Businesses interested in participating must register by April 25, with program dates set from June 9 to July 18.

The committee discussed the importance of outreach, particularly to underrepresented communities, including Hispanic youth and individuals with disabilities. While the program does not collect data on disabilities due to privacy regulations, efforts are being made to ensure inclusivity and support for all participants. The city is also tracking the success of past participants, with about 25% returning for another year.

As the program evolves, city officials emphasized the need for community involvement, encouraging local businesses and organizations to contribute as host sites or sponsors. The initiative not only aims to provide job experience but also to foster a sense of responsibility within the community to support its youth.
