Palatine residents support binding mental health referendum funding services

During the Village Council and Committee of the Whole Regular Meeting on March 3, 2025, the Palatine community took a significant step towards addressing mental health needs by discussing a binding referendum aimed at funding mental health services. The council confirmed that the referendum, which has garnered sufficient signatures, will be administered by a local group rather than the township, which has chosen to remain neutral in the matter.

Joyce Slavic, a resident of South Benton Street, emphasized the urgent need for mental health resources, stating, "We have a great need and a lot of people struggling." Patty Hand, a resident of West Wilson Street, highlighted the affordability of the proposed tax, comparing it to the cost of a large pizza, and called it a worthwhile investment in mental health.

Linda Craft, who has personal experience with mental health challenges in her family, shared her support for the initiative, underscoring the critical need for accessible services following the closure of local support facilities.
