Illinois Tollway Board approves $35M master plan to address traffic congestion

The Illinois Tollway Authority is taking significant steps to address traffic congestion at key interchanges, particularly the northbound I-355 to I-88 movement, during a recent Engineering, Planning & Development Oversight Committee meeting. The committee discussed ongoing traffic issues in this area, which sees heavy congestion as vehicles merge from local ramps and navigate through tight lanes.

One of the primary focuses is the southbound I-355 at I-88 merge, where daily traffic backups are common. The committee highlighted the need for improvements in this confined area, which also includes access points to Butterfield Road and Ogden Avenue. The Morton Arboretum's proximity adds to the traffic complexity, making it a critical point for future planning.

To tackle these challenges, the committee is recommending a $35.3 million contract with Hansen Professional Services for master plan services aimed at enhancing traffic flow and safety. Notably, $15 million of this contract is earmarked for diverse and veteran-owned firms, exceeding the established goals for such commitments. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the tollway experience for the approximately 300,000 daily travelers.

The timeline for the project includes two years for planning and studies, followed by three years of construction. However, there is a push to expedite the process, with discussions about potentially starting construction on certain segments earlier to alleviate congestion sooner.

The meeting underscored the importance of these improvements not only for current traffic conditions but also for accommodating future growth in the region. As nearby areas like Naperville and Aurora continue to develop, the tollway's enhancements aim to streamline traffic and reduce frustration for drivers, ultimately encouraging more users to utilize these roadways.
