Illinois Tollway highlights support for small and diverse firms at growth event

The Illinois Tollway's Diversity & Inclusion Committee convened on February 20, 2025, to discuss the agency's ongoing commitment to supporting small and diverse businesses. This meeting highlighted the significant impact of the Tollway's programs on the growth and development of these firms, particularly in the context of infrastructure projects across the state.

Aaron Patterson, Vice President of Business Development for Infrastructure Engineering, shared his firm’s success story, emphasizing how the Tollway's initiatives have facilitated their growth from a two-person operation to nearly 200 employees across multiple states. Patterson credited the Illinois Tollway for creating an environment where small and diverse firms can thrive, noting that the agency encourages prime contractors to partner with new and emerging businesses. This approach has allowed firms like his to gain valuable experience and build capacity, ultimately leading to their first prime construction management contract with the Tollway.

The meeting also showcased the Tollway's various outreach efforts, including the "Building for Success" webinar series, which has attracted over 800 attendees since its inception. These webinars cover essential topics such as navigating the state's procurement platform and safety protocols, with plans for more sessions in the upcoming months, including one in Spanish.

In addition to webinars, the Tollway has hosted numerous meetings and events aimed at promoting diversity in contracting. The agency reported attending nearly 140 events last year to advocate for greater awareness and participation in its diversity programs. Upcoming initiatives include an asphalt paving workshop and a competition designed to help small businesses enhance their marketing skills.

The overarching message from the meeting was a reaffirmation of the Illinois Tollway's dedication to fostering an inclusive environment for small and diverse businesses. The agency aims to continue expanding opportunities for these firms, recognizing their vital role in driving the region's economy. As the Tollway prepares for future projects, it remains committed to supporting the growth of small and diverse contractors, ensuring they have the resources and training necessary to succeed in a competitive marketplace.
