The Utah Outdoor Adventure Commission has taken a significant step towards enhancing recreational opportunities in the state by proposing the establishment of a state-of-the-art marksmanship park in Payson City. During a recent meeting, Greg Raines, Chief Commercial Officer of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), presented plans for a facility that promises to be the most technologically advanced shooting range in the United States.

The proposed marksmanship park will be built on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, with plans to acquire the site under the Recreational and Public Purpose Act. Raines emphasized the park's potential to serve as a hub for firearms safety education, marksmanship training, and competition, particularly aimed at engaging youth in shooting sports. The facility will feature advanced electronic targeting systems, allowing shooters to receive immediate feedback on their performance without the need to pause for target changes.

Raines highlighted the success of the existing Talladega Marksmanship Park in Alabama, which attracts around 2,000 visitors monthly and hosts numerous national shooting competitions. The Payson facility is expected to surpass its Alabama counterpart in size and capability, with plans for a 15,000 square foot clubhouse and shooting ranges extending up to 1,000 yards. The park aims to draw in not only shooting enthusiasts but also corporate events and community gatherings, potentially increasing visitor numbers to 3,500 or more per month.

The CMP's initiative has garnered support from local officials, including the mayor and city manager of Payson, who recognize the economic benefits the park could bring to the area. The project is projected to cost upwards of $30 million and is seen as a unique opportunity for Utah County to enhance its outdoor recreation offerings.

As the CMP moves forward with the land acquisition process, Raines expressed optimism about the park's future and its role in promoting responsible shooting practices and community engagement. The commission's commitment to safety and education will be central to the park's operations, ensuring that it serves as a valuable resource for both residents and visitors alike.
