Ottawa City Council is gearing up for an exciting opportunity for local students as they prepare for the annual business competition at Ottawa University. Scheduled for February 27, 2025, this event invites fifth through twelfth graders from Franklin County to showcase their entrepreneurial skills. Participants will create business plans, design trade show displays, and present their ideas to a panel of judges. This year, a new component—the elevator pitch—will be introduced, aligning with state-level competition requirements.
The competition offers substantial cash prizes, with $1,000 for first place, $750 for second, and $500 for third, encouraging students to engage in this valuable learning experience. Parents and students interested in participating can reach out for more information as the event approaches.
In addition to the competition, the Franklin County Development Council (FCDC) will hold its annual gathering on December 11, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 1 PM at Ottawa High School. This event aims to foster community engagement and collaboration among local stakeholders.
During the meeting, discussions also touched on financial matters concerning the FCDC. A council member inquired about the status of a previously discussed fund allocation, which had been set aside for specific projects. The FCDC representative indicated that while some years yield a surplus to contribute to this fund, upcoming expenses, such as an $11,000 housing study, may impact future contributions. A detailed financial report is expected in January, providing clarity on the current status of the fund.
These initiatives reflect the city’s commitment to fostering youth entrepreneurship and community development, setting the stage for a vibrant future in Ottawa.
