The Grand Forks Public Schools School Board meeting on March 31, 2025, highlighted the significant strides being made in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program at Grand Forks Central. The program, which aims to close the opportunity gap and prepare students for college and career readiness, is now in its third or fourth year of implementation.
Katie Grama, the district's AVID coordinator, emphasized the dual components of the program: the AVID school-wide initiative and the AVID elective class. She noted that the program is closely aligned with the district's mission to enhance educational rigor and support students' academic growth. "We really worked hard this year to define rigor," Grama stated, referencing the foundational strategies of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading—collectively known as Wicker.

Subscribe for Free Becca Lohr, an instructional coach and AVID elective teacher, shared insights into the elective class's structure and progression. Over the past two years, the program has expanded significantly, with plans for full implementation across all four grade levels by the 2026-2027 school year. This growth will allow for two sections of the AVID elective in each grade, accommodating approximately 20 students per section.
Lohr highlighted the intentional recruitment of students for the AVID elective, focusing on those with academic potential who face barriers to achieving their dreams. "They're kids who show academic potential," she explained, underscoring the program's commitment to supporting students in overcoming challenges.
The discussions at the meeting underscored the district's dedication to fostering an inclusive educational environment that empowers all students to succeed. As the AVID program continues to grow, it promises to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Grand Forks students.
