International Women of Courage Award honors advocates for human rights and women's safety

In a vibrant ceremony filled with emotion and inspiration, the 19th annual International Women of Courage Award was held on April 1, 2025, honoring remarkable women from around the globe who have made significant strides in advocating for human rights and social justice. Among the honorees was Anrit Da from Burkina Faso, a dedicated human rights defender and president of the National Human Rights Commission. Similarly, Major Valina Higa from Papua New Guinea has been a pivotal figure in the fight against trafficking and violence against women for over a decade, leading systemic changes that protect the most vulnerable.

The ceremony also recognized Angelique Sonko from The Philippines, known as the "Grama Ranger," who has successfully led efforts to protect the Tabuta Reefs National Park from illegal fishing and poaching. Her commitment to maritime law enforcement has resulted in a significant decrease in trespassers, showcasing the importance of environmental conservation.

Georgiana Poscu from Romania was honored for her relentless advocacy for the rights of individuals with disabilities, emphasizing the need for protection and support for women and girls in this community. From South Sudan, Zabib Musa Lauro Baqid has emerged as a powerful women's rights leader, founding Women for Justice and Equality to implement grassroots programs focused on peace and security.

Namini Vijay Dasu from Sri Lanka, an award-winning investigative journalist, has worked tirelessly to document the human toll of civil conflict and combat corruption, fostering dialogue for reconciliation. Lastly, Ahmad El Salam Abdullah Abdul Al Hajj from Yemen has been a crucial voice for Yemeni detainees, leading efforts to document abductions and secure the release of those wrongfully imprisoned.

As the ceremony unfolded, Amit Susana from Israel took the stage to share her personal journey as a survivor, expressing gratitude for the recognition amidst challenging circumstances.
