Horizon Behavioral Health celebrates 50 years and announces new community mental health services

Horizon Behavioral Health is set to enhance mental health services in Amherst County following a comprehensive presentation at the Amherst County Board of Supervisors meeting on April 1, 2025. Melissa Lucy, representing Horizon, highlighted the organization's 55 years of service and its commitment to addressing the community's behavioral health needs.

During the meeting, Lucy detailed Horizon's expanded portfolio of services, including new initiatives aimed at reducing hospital readmissions. Notably, the introduction of co-responder and mobile response teams will provide immediate support for individuals experiencing mental health emergencies, aligning with Governor Glenn Youngkin's "Right Help Right Now" initiative.

Horizon has also reported a significant increase in client engagement, with in-person appointments rising from 61,802 in FY 2023 to 70,279 in FY 2024. This growth reflects the community's increasing reliance on Horizon's services, which include emergency care, substance use treatment, and preventive outreach programs.

The organization has successfully connected 27 individuals with severe mental illness to permanent supportive housing, addressing homelessness in the area. Additionally, Horizon's Project Link program has provided essential support for parenting women at risk of substance use disorders, ensuring that both mothers and infants receive necessary care.

Lucy emphasized the importance of prevention, noting that Horizon's outreach efforts have resulted in over 12,000 face-to-face contacts in FY 2024. The organization continues to adapt to community needs, offering telehealth options and engaging in partnerships to combat issues like vaping among adolescents.

Looking ahead, Horizon is nearing completion of renovations for its new crisis receiving center, expected to open in March 2026. This facility will provide critical services, including detox and residential crisis stays, further solidifying Horizon's role in the region's behavioral health landscape.

The meeting underscored Horizon's ongoing commitment to delivering comprehensive, accessible mental health care, ensuring that every resident in Amherst County has the opportunity to receive the support they need.
