Kurt Mann, the deputy superintendent, reported that Crossroads Academy currently serves 86 students across various programs, including dropout prevention and traditional placements. He noted a slight decrease in expulsions compared to the previous year, indicating a positive trend in student retention.
In terms of virtual education, Mann provided enrollment statistics for both K-8 and high school programs. The K-8 virtual program has seen fluctuations in enrollment, with 97 students currently participating. The high school program, which allows students to take courses not offered in-person, has 80 full-time and 95 part-time students enrolled.
The board members expressed interest in the reasons behind students choosing virtual education, with Mann explaining that flexibility and the presence of live teachers are significant factors. He also mentioned that some students return to the district from homeschooling to take advantage of the structured virtual programs.
The meeting concluded with an invitation from Chloe to attend a presentation on May 4, where students will showcase their community service projects, further demonstrating the commitment of Cabell County Schools to fostering student engagement and community involvement.
