Mount Vernon’s Department of Buildings is set to enhance its efficiency in processing applications, following discussions during the City Council Work Session on March 24, 2024. The department aims to reduce the current 25-day turnaround time for inspections, which begins only after payment is received from applicants. City officials expressed optimism that the addition of new code enforcement officers will help streamline this process.
During the meeting, it was reported that approximately 340 applications have been submitted through the city’s OpenGov platform, with 72% reviewed and 50% permitted. The department acknowledged that staffing shortages, particularly among clerks, have impacted productivity but anticipate improvements as new hires come on board.
Financially, the department is performing well, with revenue for the first quarter showing a 215% increase compared to the same period last year. Officials expect this trend to continue, especially with several large projects already in the pipeline.
Additionally, safety inspections for multi-dwelling buildings and public assembly spaces were highlighted as critical areas of focus, ensuring compliance and safety for structures housing 50 or more individuals.
These developments signal a proactive approach by the Mount Vernon City Council to improve building safety and operational efficiency, ultimately benefiting the community as the city prepares for a busy construction season ahead.
