In a historic meeting on April 2, 2025, the City of Newark celebrated a significant transition in its city council, marking the end of an era for three long-serving members. Vice Mayor Louis Bridal, along with council members Anna Apodaca and Susie Koyaso, stepped down after a combined 51 years of service, paving the way for three newly elected officials.
The meeting began with a lively Pledge of Allegiance, led by the grandchildren of Vice Mayor Bridal and the mayor, setting a warm tone for the evening. This change is particularly notable as it follows the mayor's direct election, a shift that began in 1972.
Assemblymember Alex Lee was also acknowledged for his support of Newark, having secured $5.8 million in funding for various community projects, including infrastructure improvements and the establishment of a resource center. His contributions were celebrated as vital to the city’s development.
In addition to the council transitions, the meeting addressed Measure LL, which successfully passed with over 80% approval. This measure increases the transient occupancy tax from 10% to 14%, with the additional revenue earmarked for community projects.
