Newark City Council welcomes three new members after historic elections

In a historic meeting on April 2, 2025, the City of Newark celebrated a significant transition in its city council, marking the end of an era for three long-serving members. Vice Mayor Louis Bridal, along with council members Anna Apodaca and Susie Koyaso, stepped down after a combined 51 years of service, paving the way for three newly elected officials.

The meeting began with a lively Pledge of Allegiance, led by the grandchildren of Vice Mayor Bridal and the mayor, setting a warm tone for the evening. Mayor Michael Hannon acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing council members, highlighting their dedication to the community and the impact of their service. Apodaca, who has been a council member for over nine years, Koyaso with 13 years, and Bridal, who served for 29 years, were recognized for their commitment to Newark.

The council also welcomed new members: Terrence Bridal, Julie Del Catancho, and Eve Marie Little, marking the first time in over 50 years that Newark has sworn in three new council members simultaneously. This change is particularly notable as it follows the mayor's direct election, a shift that began in 1972.

Assemblymember Alex Lee was also acknowledged for his support of Newark, having secured $5.8 million in funding for various community projects, including infrastructure improvements and the establishment of a resource center. His contributions were celebrated as vital to the city’s development.

In addition to the council transitions, the meeting addressed Measure LL, which successfully passed with over 80% approval. This measure increases the transient occupancy tax from 10% to 14%, with the additional revenue earmarked for community projects.

As the meeting concluded, the city manager expressed gratitude for the outgoing council members and optimism for the new leadership. The council's commitment to Newark's future was emphasized, with staff ready to support the new members in implementing their vision for the community.
