Olivette's annual Turkey Trot is set to make a significant impact this Thanksgiving, with organizers anticipating record participation and increased donations to the Harvey Portland Food Pantry. During the "Coffee with the Mayor" meeting on November 13, 2024, David Moon, the event's lead coordinator, shared exciting updates about this year's race, which marks its eleventh anniversary.
The Turkey Trot, which began as a small community event, has grown tremendously, with over 1,266 runners already registered—250 more than at the same time last year. Moon highlighted the event's community spirit, noting that many volunteers return year after year, ensuring a smooth operation. This year, the race will feature new elements, including the third running of the Founders' Cup, a competition among local high school cross country teams, and a Tiny Trot for young children.
In addition to the race, a raffle for a signed jersey from local goalkeeper Rowan Berkey will raise funds for the food pantry, with tickets priced at $5 each or five for $20. The Turkey Trot has already raised over $100,000 for the pantry in its first ten years, and organizers expect this year to surpass previous donations.
The event not only promotes health and wellness but also fosters community connections, as families and friends come together to support a good cause. Mayor Olivette emphasized the importance of the Turkey Trot as a unique fundraiser in the region, distinguishing it from other commercial turkey trots.
As the community gears up for this year's race, the focus remains on building connections and supporting those in need, making the Olivette Turkey Trot a cherished tradition that embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving.
