Next Step Ministries details 2024 initiatives to support domestic violence survivors

In the heart of Kernersville, a passionate plea for community support echoed through the town hall as Alexandria Hicks, the executive director of Next Step Ministries, addressed the Board of Aldermen. With a mission to provide refuge, advocacy, and education to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, Hicks painted a vivid picture of the organization’s vital work and its impact on the community.

Next Step Ministries operates a safe house that offers free services, including daily necessities, crisis intervention, and case management. Advocates are available around the clock, ensuring that survivors receive the support they need. Hicks emphasized the importance of education and prevention, stating, “We want to stop the cycle of violence before it begins.” The organization conducts community workshops and training sessions aimed at at-risk populations, fostering awareness and understanding.

In 2024, Next Step Ministries served 321 clients, with 111 being local residents. The organization reported a remarkable 93% success rate in helping individuals find safe housing after leaving their services. Volunteers played a crucial role, contributing over 9,265 hours of service, which Hicks acknowledged as essential to the organization’s success.

Hicks highlighted several initiatives, including a stuffed animal drive for Child Abuse Awareness Month and a mural event that allowed children to express their feelings about love. The organization also launched Spanish programming to better serve the community’s diverse population.

Looking ahead, Next Step Ministries plans to develop a resource center to streamline services and improve accessibility for clients. As Hicks concluded her presentation, she underscored the importance of community support, stating, “Without the Kernersville community, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.” The Board of Aldermen listened intently, recognizing the profound impact of Next Step Ministries on the lives of many in their town.
