Doherty High School celebrates student achievements in arts and wrestling

In a vibrant gathering at the Colorado Springs School District No. 11, students from Doherty High School took center stage, showcasing their creativity and achievements during the recent Board of Education meeting. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as young artists shared their experiences from the PTA Reflections program, a platform that encourages students to express themselves through various art forms.

Sophia, a budding photographer, spoke passionately about her submission featuring fall leaves, emphasizing the importance of embracing individuality. "It gives me a chance to use that outlet," she shared, capturing the audience's attention with her heartfelt words. Aubrey followed suit, revealing her silver award-winning artwork that interpreted the theme of accepting imperfections. "I thought I could turn it into a creative and interesting interpretation," she explained, her enthusiasm infectious.

The spotlight then shifted to Paul, who presented a unique music composition inspired by the theme of self-aware machines. His creative approach resonated with the audience, showcasing the diverse talents within the school. Matt, another student, shared his photography piece that reflected the beauty of imperfect paths, reinforcing the theme that resonated throughout the evening.

The celebration of student achievements continued with a special mention of Katie Valdez, a senior and two-time wrestling state champion, who made history at Doherty High School. Although she was unable to attend due to travel commitments from an international competition, her coaches spoke highly of her remarkable journey. Coach Bubba Martinez described Katie as a "once in a lifetime athlete," while Coach Sam Martinez reflected on the privilege of witnessing her growth since middle school.
