Hickory City Council considers no wake zone to enhance safety at Lake Hickory Marina

Hickory City Council has taken a significant step towards enhancing safety on Lake Hickory by approving a no wake zone at the Lake Hickory Marina during their recent meeting on April 1, 2025. This decision aims to protect recreational boaters and improve safety for users of the popular Riverwalk area.

Planning Director Bridal Frasier presented the proposal, which seeks to establish a no wake zone extending approximately 30 feet into the lake. This initiative was prompted by concerns from local residents and marina owners, Dan and Megyn Kelly, who reported that high-speed watercraft were creating hazardous conditions for smaller vessels, including kayaks and paddleboards. The Kellys, who took ownership of the marina in 2024, emphasized the need for safety measures due to the increasing boating traffic and the narrow channel near the 321 Bridge.

The North Carolina Wildlife Commission conducted an investigation into the safety concerns and supported the establishment of the no wake zone. The council's approval will allow the resolution to be forwarded to the commission for final adoption at their June meeting. This proactive measure is expected to create a safer environment for all water users, particularly as the boating season approaches.

In addition to the no wake zone discussion, Dan Kelly expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting the potential for improved safety and the positive impact on the local community. He noted that the Riverwalk has become a popular destination for paddlers and that the no wake zone would enhance the overall recreational experience on the lake.
