Orange County Board of Education supports Assembly Bill 1224 for teacher shortage relief

The first resolution, known as Resolution 925, seeks to extend the duration that emergency substitute teachers can serve in classrooms from 30 days to 60 days. This change is in response to a statewide teacher shortage, as emphasized by County Superintendent Dr. Bean. He noted that all 58 county superintendents have lobbied for this resolution in Sacramento, urging state legislators to support the measure. The second resolution addresses the Williams settlement, which mandates inspections of school facilities, curriculum, and teacher assignments to ensure compliance with educational standards. Dr. Bean explained that due to increased chronic absenteeism during the pandemic, the number of schools requiring inspection has quadrupled. The proposed bill would allow county superintendents to conduct these inspections within eight weeks instead of the current four-week timeframe. This adjustment aims to streamline the inspection process and ensure that more schools are evaluated efficiently.

Following the approval of these resolutions, the Board will send letters of support to state legislators, reinforcing their commitment to improving educational conditions in Orange County.
