Starting as an administrative aide in the utilities department, Lightfoot quickly distinguished herself with her attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Over the years, she advanced to senior staff assistant and later took on the role of plan reviewer and cost estimator, where her expertise ensured the accuracy and precision of city projects. In 2019, she transitioned to the position of administrative specialist, continuing to demonstrate her versatility and work ethic.

Throughout her career, Lightfoot has worked under eight different directors, adapting to various leadership styles and contributing to the success of each. Her resilience and unwavering support have made a lasting impact on the city, inspiring her colleagues and enhancing the operations of the public works department.
