Sullivan County's Economic Development Committee is taking significant steps to enhance employment opportunities for residents, particularly those with disabilities. During a recent meeting, committee members discussed the availability of additional funding from the New York State Department of Labor for the Skyon program, which provides essential employment services to job seekers with disabilities. Loreen, a key figure in this initiative, is collaborating with fiscal representatives to secure these funds, which will support on-the-job training contracts and neurodiversity training for staff.
The committee also highlighted the success of the newly launched electrical training program, which began on March 25 and has attracted a full class of 15 students from a pool of 70 applicants. This program is part of a broader effort to address local workforce needs and enhance job skills among residents.

An in-house hiring event is scheduled for April 10 at 50 North Street, featuring participation from BOCES, Thompson Sanitation, and Access Supports for Living, aimed at connecting job seekers with potential employers.
The committee also announced the upcoming Summer Youth Employment Program, set to begin in July. Applications are now open, with a deadline of May 9, and the program will fund up to 50 positions for young people in the community.
Despite these positive developments, the unemployment rate in Sullivan County remains at 4.1%, with job growth showing little change. The committee's ongoing efforts to secure funding and enhance training programs are crucial steps toward improving employment outcomes and supporting the local economy.
