Twinsburg Board of Education plans property swap for new elementary school construction

The Twinsburg Board of Education is set to enhance local education infrastructure with the approval of a new elementary school, following a productive meeting on April 2, 2025. The proposed school, designed for preschool through sixth grade, will be strategically located near existing residential areas, addressing community concerns about traffic and drainage issues.

Superintendent Powers highlighted the importance of community engagement, noting that the board has met with residents living near the school site, particularly those in condominium developments off Ravenna Road. These residents expressed worries about the potential impact of the new building on their neighborhoods. In response, the board is exploring solutions to longstanding drainage problems that have affected these properties, leveraging the development of the school to improve local infrastructure.

A significant aspect of the meeting was the proposed property swap with the Hans family, who own a substantial portion of land adjacent to the school site. In exchange for a 2.6-acre lot, the Hans family will receive the Board of Education's property at 11136 Ravenna Road. This partnership is expected to facilitate the school’s construction while also benefiting the community.

Additionally, the board is working with Mr. and Mrs. Scott Depew to secure another strip of land that will serve as a bus access point. This new arrangement aims to separate bus traffic from parent drop-off zones, alleviating congestion during peak hours and enhancing safety for students and families.

The meeting also addressed concerns about stormwater management. With the development of the new school, the board is committed to adhering to modern building codes that require effective water mitigation strategies. Collaborating with local authorities, including Summit County and the Army Corps of Engineers, the board plans to implement storm drainage systems that will not only serve the new school but also assist nearby condominiums facing drainage challenges.

Finally, the board discussed a traffic study conducted by TMS, which will analyze traffic patterns around the district and recommend necessary improvements, such as potential traffic lights and roadway widenings.
