Charles County updates community on 3 Notch Trail development plans

The St. Mary's County Recreation and Parks Board recently held a meeting to discuss the much-anticipated 3 Notch Trail project, which aims to enhance recreational and transportation options for residents. As the project progresses into its planning and design phase, the board emphasized the importance of gathering public input to ensure community needs are met.

This initiative has been in development for several years, and the board acknowledged that it has been some time since they last sought feedback from the community. To address this, they launched a public input campaign, inviting citizens to share their thoughts and concerns. The response has been largely positive, with many residents expressing excitement about the trail's potential, although some voiced concerns regarding the project's budget.

The 3 Notch Trail is designed as a 10-foot wide asphalt multi-use path, intended to serve as both a recreational space and a transportation corridor. It will run along the county's railroad right-of-way, stretching from Hughesville in Charles County to areas near the Pax River Naval Air Station. This trail is included in the Maryland State Transportation Plan and is a key component of the county's Land Preservation, Parks, and Recreation Plan, highlighting its significance in local planning efforts.

Currently, the project is in the midst of developing Phase 7, which will connect a new trailhead property in Hollywood to the Harris Teeter shopping center. Other phases of the trail are either completed or in progress, with portions already linking shopping centers and providing residents with convenient access to various amenities.
