Little Compton survey reveals residents' desire to stay despite isolation concerns

The Little Compton Town Council meeting held on December 19, 2024, focused on community insights regarding housing, transportation, health, and caregiver support, as revealed through a recent survey of residents.

The meeting began with a discussion on the long-term residency of community members, highlighting that 76% of respondents have lived in Little Compton for 45 years or more. This strong sense of community is further emphasized by the fact that 98% of residents expressed a desire to remain in the town for at least the next five years. However, concerns were raised about isolation, particularly regarding access to family, medical care, and other essential services, especially for those who may have difficulty driving.

Transportation issues were also a significant topic. While most residents currently rely on personal vehicles or trusted drivers, about 15% reported challenges in accessing transportation, leading to missed medical appointments. Suggestions were made to expand the availability of senior vans and public transportation options to better serve the community's needs.

Health and well-being were addressed, with survey results indicating that 90% of respondents reported being in good or excellent health. Additionally, all participants had access to nutritional foods. However, 6% expressed concerns about poor health, and 40% noted being affected by substance abuse issues within their social circles, underscoring the need for community support systems.

Caregiver support emerged as another critical area of discussion. Over half of the respondents indicated they had provided care in the past five years, with many finding the experience challenging. The most valued forms of support for caregivers included assistance from friends and family, in-home care services, and telehealth options.

Overall, the meeting highlighted a community that is largely content and socially connected, yet facing challenges related to transportation, health, and caregiver support. The Town Council plans to address these issues through enhanced social programs and resources to ensure the well-being of all residents.
