UAB increases EEC renovation budget to $33.5M for Arts and Sciences hub development

The University of Alabama System's Board of Trustees meeting on April 3, 2025, spotlighted a significant expansion project for the College of Arts and Sciences, with a budget increase from $17.5 million to $33.5 million. This ambitious renovation plan for the East Wing of the Education and Engineering Complex (EEC) aims to transform the first and second floors into a vibrant hub for the Department of Art and Art History, enhancing instructional and administrative spaces.

The project will address critical structural issues identified during phase one, including deteriorating masonry ties and failed insulation systems. The renovation will introduce a new metal panel cladding system and aluminum storefront glazing, alongside a new roof for the easternmost wing of the building. The enhancements are designed to modernize the facility and better serve the needs of students and faculty.

Funding for the $14 million increase will come from future bond revenues, as well as reserve funds from the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education. The resolution to approve the project was met with unanimous support from the board.

In addition to the renovation discussion, the meeting also covered a lease agreement amendment for UAB Saint Vincent’s Physician Services in Gardendale. The amendment extends the lease for an additional five years, ensuring continued access to primary care and cardiology services in the area.
