University of Alabama approves $54.6M expansion for Coleman Coliseum training facility

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees convened on April 3, 2025, to discuss several significant construction projects and budget adjustments aimed at enhancing campus facilities. The meeting highlighted key developments in infrastructure and equipment upgrades across the university and its associated health facilities.

One of the primary topics was the approval of a revised budget for the Coleman Coliseum basketball training and player development facility. The project, which has been under review for several months, saw a reduction in its total budget from $59.1 million to approximately $54.6 million due to favorable bidding outcomes. Harrison Construction was awarded the contract, and the project aims to support both men's and women's basketball programs.

Additionally, the board reviewed the Colonial Drive and University Boulevard infrastructure enhancements project. This initiative, which focuses on improving storm drainage and traffic flow, has also seen a budget decrease from $15 million to $14.8 million. The project will now include enhanced security measures, particularly for game days, with the installation of bollard systems.

The meeting also addressed the RISE Center Playscape Renovations, which will provide accessible play areas for children of all developmental levels. The project budget remains at $3 million, funded through a combination of gifts and university reserves.

Other notable projects discussed included the expansion of student recreation courts and the establishment of a Student Well-being Hub, both of which are aimed at improving student life on campus. The total budget for the Student Well-being Hub is approximately $59.9 million, while the recreation court expansion is budgeted at just over $1.6 million.

Lastly, the North Engineering Research Center's basement fit-out was approved for planning, with a budget of $3.125 million allocated for future development to accommodate the growing needs of the College of Engineering.
